Amazing Hawaii Comic Con was Amazing!

It was a very busy weekend for me.  I'm fortunate enough to be able to sit at the Mana Comics table promoting Au'Makua Guardians of Hawaii as the layout/storyboard artist.  If you haven't read it, it's a fun superhero book that doesn't take itself seriously.  On my end, I got to meet new fans and create new fans of my book (with writer/co-creator, Tim Nelson).  Overall, the response has been positive.

I'll also be posting the various commissions I compiler over the next week with some captions.

Amazing Con Prep is going well

Right now things are on track for my first Ashcan comic to be available at Amazing Hawaii Comic Con this year.  It's been a long time coming and I hope to have a new short story at every con appearance moving forward.  In addition to my comic, I'll be doing commissions and selling pins and magnets featuring my artwork.  Here are some of the magnets:
Hope to see you there!

Dwarfstar7 - first Ashcan for Amazing Con?

Here are two of the leads in this first storyOne of my best friends, Tim, and I have long been loosely working on a project called Dwarfstar7 that mingled fairy tales in a sci-fi setting. It seems that everyone and their brother has developed similar ideas.  We've tweaked things a bit and we think we're finally ready to get it going.  I plan to put together an eight page B&w ashcan comic for Amazing Con in September to introduce some if the characters and finally get something of ours out there.  Here are two of the leads for this first story:

Free Comic Book Day 2015

This year, I was fortunate enough to be invited to promote Au'Makua Guardians of Hawaii at Westside Comics in Kapolei. I think promoting comics (and reading in general) to young people (especially kids) is essential.  I did a bunch of free sketches for patrons.  It feels so awesome to give a sketch to a kid who is legitimately excited to see their favorite characters come to life.

Au'Makua - Issue #1 Thumbnails

A lot of people have asked what I do on the book since I am a layout artist.  When I explain that I essentially storyboard the book then do the initial drawings with Chris Caravalho doing the finished artwork, most people seem to jump to the conclusion that I am the penciller and that Chris is the inker.  Basically, I do the "storyboard" and then put in really rough pencils for Chris to clean up and finish.
Above is the thumbnail/storyboard for page 3 to give an example.  This gives Chris a good idea of the story pace and dialogue placement (which is very important and harder than it looks). After it's approved, I put that on the actual page for Chris to tighten the images/artwork and add the backgrounds.
And that's essentially how it works.  For more random sketches/work, follow me on InstaGram: @krislohmanart

I will be posting more work related stuff here--relating both to the Au'Makua process and to my own creator-owned comics: DwarfStar 7 and Dangercomics!
